We talk a lot about ending homelessness in DC, and we think deeply about how to do that. More affordable housing! More jobs! Better health care! All of these are certainly part of the solution. But from where I sit at NEW, I say what we need most are dedicated case managers who not only continue to work with the clients but provide that positive and encouraging relationship with the women. One that can inspire them and propel them forward so they can achieve stability and confidence, and live healthy lives.
We need case managers who are on the ground every day, helping with little to no fanfare. They are a big part of the solution. And no nonprofit has more talented and compassionate case managers than NEW. With immense patience and empathy for every client, our case managers do what they do out of a strong desire to help. And the women feel that!
The case managers go above and beyond to help the women develop their self-esteem after years of being put down. One case manager, Ieashia, recently started a crocheting class to give the women a new way to expand their talents and provide a productive hobby for their free time. Another case manager, Domonique, hosts movie nights for the women where they can gather in community and feel that they are not alone. Yet another one, Jeff, is searching for innovative ways to reach the women, looking for classes and inexpensive workshops while being a kind and open presence to the women.
When you give to NEW, you are facilitating this kind of dedicated help for women in DC. “I love my case manager to death!” NEW client, Casandra, told me recently. “She has taught me so much.”
I am so proud of our NEW staff, the work they do, as well as the tenacity to keep doing it every day. As the holiday season approaches, I hope you’ll consider making a gift to NEW in honor of the women and children who are experiencing homelessness and the people who are with them daily, building them up, inspiring them to go on, and working with them to get their lives back. You can make a gift by returning the attached form with a check or by donating online at nebw.org.
Your gift to our End-of-Year-Campaign will enable us to continue working to end homelessness in DC.
With Gratitude,
Wanda Steptoe, Executive Director
